The read-a-thon is run by Heifer International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing livestock, supplies, and training to families in poverty to help them achieve sustainable income that they then pass on to others in their community. Students pledge to read a certain amount every day for the 8-week program. Friends and family members can sponsor them in their efforts, so the time they spend reading ends up raising money for things like cows, goats, and chickens for families in need.
This is not a PTA fundraiser. Instead, it’s a chance for our kids to make a difference in the lives of struggling families.
The best part about Read to Feed is that it’s a win-win. Our kids spend more time reading to meet their daily and weekly goals. Through their efforts, they can help families become self-reliant, and they learn that they have to power to change the world.
You can participate in the read-a-thon without fundraising for Heifer International. But if you’d like to donate a few dollars, or if you have family members or friends who could do the same, it’s a worthy cause, and a great way for kids to help others while improving their reading skills.
Donation checks should be made out to Heifer International: Read to Feed.
If you’d like to create a fundraising website, click here and then hit the teal “Become a Fundraiser” button on the right-hand side of the page. You will have the option of joining a team. Just search for Franklin Elementary School (this is currently last year’s page, but it will work for now as we try to get a new team page going). You and your child can customize your page with a photo and a message, then send it to friends and family members who might like to help.
Thanks for helping our global community!
